Jewish New York, printed too big.

058637 makes the shirts I kept looking for and could not find: old faces, sharp lines, neighborhood evidence and Jewish references that do not stop to introduce themselves.

THE STARTING PILE

Menus, matchbooks, family pictures, bad Xeroxes.

Add old newspaper ads, Catskills leftovers, rabbis, deli counters, punk flyers, hand-painted signs and people with faces too good to leave in a folder. That is roughly the desk.

NOT MERCH

The reference does not need a tour guide.

No bagel added for clarity. No giant paragraph explaining why the joke is Jewish. The people who know will know; everybody else can meet the shirt where it is.

THE BACK

This is where the whole argument happens.

Big face, loud headline, crooked type, too much information. The front can be civil. The back gets the newspaper, the family story and the part someone reads over your shoulder on the train.

NEW YORK

Not the skyline version.

Paper in a storefront window. Somebody arguing at the counter. A flyer taped over another flyer. The place you swore would always be there, gone by the next lease.

THE ONLY TEST

Would I leave the house in it?

The reference can be obscure and the joke can whisper. The shirt still has to work when nobody nearby knows the story. Otherwise it is a research project with sleeves.

AFTER THAT

Please ruin it correctly.

Wash it. Fade it. Lend it to somebody unreliable. Wear it to dinner, shul, a show, the supermarket, wherever. The archive did its job; now the shirt needs a life.

The number stays unexplained.

SEND SOMETHING

Good evidence is welcome.

An old photo, family ephemera, a restaurant menu, a person I missed, a shirt idea, a correction, a complaint: info@058637.xyz. Do not send the only copy.

It is a shirt project. It is also becoming something else. Good.
